The Art Gallery of South Australia is defined by a neoclassical sandstone facade and a colonnaded portico that faces North Terrace. Established in eighteen eighty-one, it first opened within two rooms of the city's public library, officially inaugurated by the fifteen-year-old Prince George, who would later become King George the Fifth.
