Celestial Avenue is a short, dead-end lane paved with rough, dark bluestone that runs north off Little Bourke Street. It sits at the heart of Melbourne's Chinatown, tucked between Swanston and Russell streets. Originally called Celestial Alley, the lane earned its name in the nineteenth century from the term used by European colonists to describe Chinese immigrants, the sons of the Celestial Empire.
