The Salt Building is marked by its expansive, open timber-frame construction and a large clerestory of windows designed to brighten the long interior space. Built around nineteen thirty, the structure was originally constructed on one hundred and fifty-five wooden piles that supported it above the historic False Creek shoreline. Its initial purpose was to process unrefined salt shipped by scow from the San Francisco Bay Area, which was then washed, dried, and ground down to serve as a vital preservative for the local fishing industry.
