Maple Tree Squares

Maple Tree Square is the intersection where Water, Powell, Alexander, and Carrall streets meet. It is recognized as the birthplace of Vancouver, serving as the spot where John Deighton, famously nicknamed Gassy Jack, opened the Globe Saloon in eighteen sixty-seven. A settlement of mill workers and sailors quickly grew around his business, eventually expanding into the modern city. While no actual maple tree remains at the site, the area takes its name from a large tree that once stood here.
