The Commodore Ballroom on Granville Street is recognizable by its Art Deco façade, which features distinctive decorative tilework and a prominent parapet. Built by George Conrad Reifel and opened in December nineteen thirty as the Commodore Cabaret, the venue was designed by architect Henry Gillingham to offer an upscale alternative to the city's crowded hotel ballrooms. Its centerpiece is a legendary sprung dance floor constructed of hardwood laid over tires filled with horsehair, a feature designed to provide a distinctive, cushioned bounce for dancers.
