The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is enclosed by tall, plain white walls that contrast sharply with the surrounding bustle of Vancouver's Chinatown. Completed in nineteen eighty-six, it holds the distinction of being the first full-scale Ming Dynasty-style scholar’s garden ever constructed outside of China. Its creation was part of a community-led effort to reclaim the neighborhood after plans for a freeway connector through the heart of the district were defeated.
