The Royal Ontario Museum is instantly recognizable by the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, a jagged, contemporary structure of glass and aluminum that erupts from the historic stone facade. Opened in nineteen fourteen, the museum began as a collaboration between the University of Toronto and the provincial government to house five separate collections of archaeology, palaeontology, mineralogy, zoology, and geology. It is now the largest museum in Canada, holding over eighteen million artifacts that range from ancient Egyptian treasures to extensive natural history specimens.
