University College is defined by its thick walls of light yellow brick and stone, marked by an eclectic mix of Romanesque and Gothic Revival arches. Completed in eighteen fifty-nine, this central landmark at the University of Toronto was designed by architects Frederick William Cumberland and William George Storm. Its construction was a radical departure for the era, as the college was established as a non-denominational institution at a time when most higher education was tied to specific churches.
