The Art Gallery of Ontario is recognizable by the striking, undulating glass and wood façade designed by Toronto-born architect Frank Gehry. This sprawling museum complex now holds more than one hundred and twenty thousand works, but it began in nineteen hundred as the Art Museum of Toronto, a modest institution founded by a group of private citizens. Its first permanent home was The Grange, an eighteen-seventeen brick mansion bequeathed to the museum by Harriet Boulton Smith in nineteen hundred and eleven.
