The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre on Yonge Street is the last operating double-decker theatre in the world. Its masonry and terracotta façade hides a unique interior design where two separate auditoriums are stacked directly on top of each other. The lower house, the Elgin, opened in nineteen thirteen with ornate gold-leaf and plasterwork, while the Winter Garden was built seven stories above it in nineteen fourteen to resemble an atmospheric garden, complete with hand-painted murals, tree-trunk columns, and thousands of real dried beech leaves woven into the ceiling.
