Victoria Memorial Square

Victoria Memorial Square is defined by a central, wrought-iron fenced enclosure that protects a stone pedestal and bronze sculpture, all sitting within a quiet, grass-covered block. This site, established in seventeen ninety-four, was the first official burial ground for European settlers in the Town of York. Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe chose the land for the garrison at nearby Fort York, and his infant daughter, Katherine, was the first person interred here.
