Fort York National Historic Site

Fort York is a forty-three-acre site distinguished by its ring of bastioned earthworks that stand in stark contrast to the modern high-rise buildings surrounding it. It houses the largest collection of original War of eighteen-twelve buildings in Canada, including blockhouses, barracks, and an officers' quarters. Established in seventeen-ninety-three by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe to protect the harbor, the fort served as the primary military defense for the town of York, which eventually became Toronto.
