The Palacio Nacional, or National Palace, occupies a city block in downtown Medellín with a facade defined by a profusion of rhythmic stone arches. Designed by the Belgian architect Agustín Goovaerts, the structure was built between nineteen twenty-five and nineteen thirty-three on the site of a former jail. It was originally intended to house eighty-eight government offices, including postal, judicial, and telegraph services.
