The Fort de Loyasse sits on the hillside of the ninth arrondissement, distinguished by its heavily inclined defensive slopes, or glacis, which allowed it to blend into the steep terrain. Built between eighteen thirty-six and eighteen forty, this massive structure was commissioned following the July Revolution to protect Lyon from potential invasions from the east. It stands as a notable example of early nineteenth-century military architecture, serving as a transitional design between traditional bastion fortifications and fully sunken, earth-covered structures.
