The Avenue de la Liberté is defined by a series of grand, uniform facades that reveal the city's transformation during the late nineteenth century. Built as the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Strasse in eighteen eighty-two, this broad thoroughfare was the centerpiece of the Neustadt, or New Town, created after the Franco-Prussian War to manifest the might and administrative reach of the German Empire.
