Henri Matisse Park is defined by an artificial, concrete-walled plateau that rises twenty-three feet above the surrounding ground. Built between nineteen ninety-six and two thousand three as part of the Euralille development, the eight-hectare park sits directly beside the Lille-Europe station. It was designed by the landscape architect Gilles Clément, who used excess soil and debris from the station's construction to build the central feature known as Derborence Island.
