La Vieille Bourse

monument

La Vieille Bourse is a square structure formed by twenty-four identical houses built around an open-air courtyard. You can identify it by the ornate Flemish Renaissance facades and the golden statue of Mercury, the god of commerce, which crowns the building’s campanile. Constructed between sixteen fifty-two and sixteen fifty-three, this monument was commissioned by the citizens of Lille under Spanish rule to serve as a central hub for the city’s textile merchants.
