The Colonne de la Déesse rises from the center of the Place du Général-de-Gaulle, a granite column topped by a bronze statue of a woman wearing a mural crown. She holds a boutefeu, an implement used to light cannon fuses, in her right hand and gestures toward an inscription on the base that records the city’s refusal to surrender during the siege of seventeen ninety-two.
