The Jardin Vauban is marked by its winding paths, expansive green lawns, and an artificial grotto that feeds water into the park’s ponds. Established in eighteen sixty-three under the direction of the landscape architect Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps, this three and a half hectare space was originally known as the park of the Empress Eugénie. It represents a romantic style of garden popular during the Second Empire, designed to provide a tranquil escape within the growing city.
