Parc de la Citadelle

park garden

The Parc de la Citadelle is defined by its massive, star-shaped fortress, a pentagon of brick and stone walls that anchor the largest green space in Lille. Built between sixteen sixty-seven and sixteen seventy at the command of King Louis XIV, this structure was designed by his chief military engineer, Sébastien Le Prestre, Marquis de Vauban. It occupies land that was once marshy terrain at the junction of the Deûle and Bucquet rivers, a strategic choice that allowed Vauban to flood the surrounding area as an additional defensive barrier.
