The Esplanade du Champ de Mars is a vast, open expanse defined by its extreme scale and its direct, centuries-old connection to the neighboring Citadelle de Lille. Stretching nearly nine hundred meters in length, this flat, paved ground sits at the edge of the old city as a massive threshold between the urban grid and the defensive works designed by the engineer Vauban between sixteen sixty-seven and sixteen seventy.
