The Square Normandie-Niémen is one of twenty-four public green spaces in Malakoff. Its name commemorates the French fighter regiment that flew alongside Soviet forces on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. Formed in nineteen forty-two at the suggestion of General Charles de Gaulle, the unit became widely known for its participation in the intense battles to secure the Neman River region.
