In a quiet corner of Malakoff, at the end of the Sentier du Tir, stands a solitary gas street lamp known to the locals as Léon. It is the last remaining gas-powered street lamp in the Paris region, a delicate survivor from an era when gas light defined the urban night. The lantern is inscribed with the names of three scientists—Philippe Lebon, William Murdoch, and Carl Auer von Welsbach—who pioneered gas lighting technology.
