The Cimetière parisien de Pantin stretches across one hundred seven hectares, making it the largest active cemetery in France. Opened in eighteen eighty-six to accommodate the rapid population growth of Paris, it was designed as an extra-muros site, meaning it serves the capital from beyond the city’s administrative boundaries. Its grid of long, straight avenues and numbered sections holds nearly one hundred forty-five thousand graves, and over one million people have been laid to rest here since its founding.
