The Centre National de la Danse is a massive, Brutalist structure defined by its raw concrete exterior and dramatic, geometric forms that jut out along the banks of the Canal de l’Ourcq. Completed in nineteen seventy-three by architect Jacques Kalisz, it was originally commissioned as a municipal administrative hub, intended to consolidate city services like the police station and courthouse under one roof. Local residents nicknamed it the Palace of the People, though the building’s heavy, imposing aesthetic initially sparked significant controversy.
