The Hôpital Fernand-Widal is a landmark along the rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis, distinguished by a layout designed in eighteen fifty-eight by architect Théodore Labrouste. Seeking to address the severe cholera outbreaks of the nineteenth century, Labrouste arranged symmetrical pavilions on either side of a central courtyard, a plan meant to ensure the circulation of light and air to prevent the spread of contagion.
