Place Jean-Michel Basquiat is a wide, paved square in the thirteenth arrondissement, marked by tall, thin light poles and large, geometric concrete planters. It sits directly above the tracks of the Petite Ceinture, the abandoned circular railway that once ringed Paris. Before this square took its current form, heavy steel rails carried coal and freight through this deep trench.
