Studios Jenner was a repurposed warehouse at twenty-five bis rue Jenner that served as the personal film studio and residence for director Jean-Pierre Melville from nineteen forty-seven until his death in nineteen seventy-three. Melville, a former French Resistance fighter who took his stage name from the author of Moby Dick, bought the industrial building to achieve total creative independence from the unionized French film industry. He lived in an apartment above the soundstage for nearly fifteen years, often referring to the facility as his shoemaker’s shop.
