The building at thirty-five bis, rue Paul Valéry, was for years the home of the Musée Dapper, a private institution dedicated to the arts of Africa, the Caribbean, and their diasporas. Established in nineteen eighty-six by Michel Leveau and his wife, Christiane Falgayrettes-Leveau, the museum moved into this space in the year two thousand. It was named after Olfert Dapper, a seventeenth-century Dutch humanist who published an extensive encyclopedic description of the African continent.
