Boulevard Barbès is an eight hundred thirty-five meter artery cutting through the eighteenth arrondissement, distinguished by the elevated iron viaduct of the metro line that looms over its southern intersection. Created in eighteen sixty-seven during the urban renovations directed by Baron Haussmann, the street takes its name from Armand Barbès, a nineteenth-century revolutionary and republican activist. His name was chosen as an act of homage by the local working-class community that settled here as Paris expanded outward.
