Thiers wall

The Thiers wall is a thirty-three kilometer perimeter that once defined the military border of Paris. Constructed between eighteen forty-one and eighteen forty-four under the direction of the French government, the structure consisted of ninety-four bastions and a deep ditch. While it was commissioned by prime minister Adolphe Thiers to prevent foreign armies from occupying the capital, the project met immediate suspicion from political opponents who believed the fortifications were actually intended to threaten Parisian citizens during internal revolts.
