The garden of Peace (or Japanese Garden) of UNESCO

park garden

The Garden of Peace at the UNESCO headquarters is defined by eighty-eight granite stones, each hand-selected by the sculptor Isamu Noguchi from the island of Shikoku in Japan. Completed in nineteen fifty-eight, this seventeen-hundred-square-meter space serves as a meditative landscape within the international diplomatic compound. It integrates concrete, raked gravel, and water, arranged to create a deliberate balance between traditional Japanese aesthetic codes and modern sculptural expression.
