Théâtre Le Temple

The building at eighteen rue du Faubourg du Temple stands on a site with a long, shifting history of performance. In seventeen eighty-two, British cavalry officer Philip Astley and his associate Antonio Franconi established the Amphithéâtre anglais here, which served as the first permanent circus in Paris. For decades, the space was dedicated to equestrian displays, acrobats, and clowns.
