Académie de la Grande Chaumière

The Académie de la Grande Chaumière is a historic art school defined by its humble, workshop-style exterior, featuring large metal-framed glass windows and walls of wood and brick. Founded in nineteen oh four by the Swiss painter Martha Stettler, the school emerged as an alternative to the rigid rules of the École des Beaux-Arts. It provided a space where students could draw and paint from live models without the pressure of formal academic instruction, famously offering little more than a model and warmth during the winter months.
