Fontaines de la Concorde

The Fontaines de la Concorde are two monumental, symmetrical fountains that flank the Luxor Obelisk in the center of the Place de la Concorde. Designed by architect Jacques Ignace Hittorff and completed in eighteen forty, these fountains feature ornate basins decorated with bronze tritons, nereids, and allegorical figures. The south fountain, known as the Fontaine des Mers, honors France’s maritime industry, while the north fountain, the Fontaine des Fleuves, celebrates river navigation and trade.
