The Square d’Anvers—Jean-Claude-Carrière is a rectangular public park defined by its broad, open pathways and a music pavilion that sits near the shadow of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. Opened in eighteen seventy-seven, the space occupies the site of what was once the Montmartre abattoirs, which were cleared in the mid-nineteenth century to make way for new urban development.
