The Hotel Negresco is defined by its pink dome, which rises prominently above the Promenade des Anglais overlooking the Bay of Angels. Henri Negresco, a Romanian innkeeper's son, opened the hotel in nineteen thirteen after a career managing casinos and luxury restaurants. The hotel was an immediate success, but its early history turned abruptly when World War I broke out in nineteen fourteen.
