Niccolò Paganini, the celebrated Italian violinist often called the Devil's Violinist, spent his final months in Nice, arriving here in eighteen thirty-nine after the financial ruin of his casino venture in Paris. Already weakened by years of chronic illness, he settled into a quiet life in the city to restore his fading health. His presence in Nice is remembered today through several local properties that carry his name, marking the locations where he resided during those last, difficult days before his death on May twenty-seventh, eighteen forty.
