The Cimetière du Château occupies the summit of the hill that once held Nice’s sixteenth-century citadel. Its most distinct feature is the collection of ornate white marble chapel-style tombs that cover the terraces, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the city below. The site was established in seventeen eighty-three after the King of Sardinia, Victor-Amadeus the Third, banned burials within city churches, forcing the local population to relocate their dead to this former military stronghold.
