Place Garibaldi

other

Place Garibaldi is defined by its ochre-yellow buildings, green shutters, and arcades that surround a central open space. Designed by architect Antoine Spinelli and completed in seventeen seventy-three, it is the oldest square in Nice. The facades around the square feature a mix of stone relief sculptures and detailed paintings, designed to deceive the eye with three-dimensional illusions. Beneath the modern tram lines and the busy surface, the site sits directly over the ruins of medieval city fortifications and residential settlements that date back to thirteen eighty.
