Gaukurinn occupies a space on Tryggvagata that has operated as a music venue since nineteen eighty-three. When it first opened under the name Gaukur á Stöng, beer was illegal in Iceland. To work around this, the establishment served a surrogate drink called bjórlíki, which consisted of non-alcoholic pilsner mixed with a shot of vodka.
