Prime Minister's Residence at Tjarnargata

The Prime Minister’s Residence on Tjarnargata is a historic building, distinguished by its light-colored facade and three prominent dormer windows overlooking the street. Originally built in eighteen ninety-two as a whaling station in the Westfjords, it was later purchased by Hannes Hafsteinn, Iceland’s first minister, for a nominal sum of one to five Icelandic króna. He arranged to have the entire structure dismantled, transported to the capital, and rebuilt in its present form in nineteen oh six.
