Mahaneh Yehudah Market is defined by the hundreds of metal stall shutters that transform into an open-air art gallery once the vendors close for the day. While these shutters display vibrant, large-scale portraits of historical figures and local personalities, the market itself began in the late nineteenth century as a cluster of informal stands on a vacant lot owned by the Valero family. Arab farmers and local merchants used the space to sell produce to residents living outside the Old City walls.
