The Generali Building is identifiable by the large, stone sculpture of a winged lion resting on its roof. This figure, known as the Lion of Saint Mark, holds an open book and sits above an engraving of the year eighteen thirty-one, marking the founding of the Italian insurance company that commissioned the structure. Designed by the architect Marcello Piacentini and completed in nineteen thirty-five, the building blends neoclassical and modern architectural styles.
