The Western Wall is a massive limestone retaining wall, characterized by its towering, ancient stone blocks that form the western support of the Temple Mount plateau. Constructed by King Herod the Great around nineteen BCE, this structure was designed to create a flat, elevated space for the Second Temple complex. When the Roman army destroyed the Temple in seventy CE, this outer fortification survived while the interior buildings were reduced to ruins.
