The Cathedral of Saint James sits behind fortress-like walls in the heart of the Armenian Quarter. It is recognized by a large, wooden board called a semantron that hangs in the courtyard. When rulers in the fourteenth century forbade the use of church bells, this piece of wood and its mallet became the official way to call the faithful to prayer.
