The Dormition Abbey stands on Mount Zion, just outside the walls of the Old City, and is recognizable by its massive stone bell tower and conical roof that dominate the local skyline. This Benedictine monastery marks the site where, according to Christian tradition, the Virgin Mary ended her earthly life. The Latin name, Dormition Sanctae Mariae, refers to this "falling asleep" of the mother of Jesus.
