Zion Gate is defined by the hundreds of bullet holes that pockmark its stone exterior, earning it the enduring nickname of the Wounded Gate. Built in fifteen forty by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the gate serves as the southern entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem. Its L-shaped design was specifically engineered for defense, forcing anyone entering the city to make a sharp ninety-degree turn under the archway, which slowed attackers and exposed them to guards positioned in the structure above.
