The Tower of David is a stone citadel featuring a tall, slender minaret that rises above massive defensive walls near the Jaffa Gate. King David did not build the structure. It occupies foundations laid by Hasmonean rulers during the second century before the common era. King Herod the Great constructed three massive towers at this location, naming them for his brother, his friend, and his wife, Mariamne, to protect the palace he maintained nearby.
