בית כנסת החורבה - Hurva Synagogue

religious

The Hurva Synagogue is distinguished by a massive, soaring central dome that rises twenty-four meters above the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. This building is a reconstruction of an nineteenth-century Ottoman-style structure, itself built on the site of earlier ruins. Its name, Hurva, means ruin in Hebrew, a title it earned after the original congregation in the early eighteenth century defaulted on debts to local lenders, leading to the destruction of their first synagogue and their subsequent expulsion from Jerusalem.
